History of Glenthorne

Studios at Glenthorne was established in 2013, with a great, central location which enables our guests to truly immerse themselves in the thriving cultural landscape of Merthyr Tydfil.

Merthyr Tydfil is a town that owes its existence directly to the Industrial Revolution - the first ironworks opened in 1759. The mining and iron industries allowed Merthyr Tydfil to grow into the biggest town in the country within a hundred years. However, growth came at a price; atrocious living and working conditions for the workers led to the Merthyr Rising, out of which grew the world’s first trades unions, as well as the association of the red flag with the labour movement. Merthyr had the biggest ironworks in the world during the 19th century, and the first Labour MP, Keir Hardie, represented Merthyr Tydfil consituency.  Breweries grew up alongside the mines and works, and brewing became a very large industry in itself, with many workers being paid in beer tokens.

Glenthorne, a beautiful late victorian house was built in the late1800's by James Threasher Harrap, part owner of the Giles & Harrap Brewery (locally known as the Merthyr Brewery).  'Jimmy' Harrap created a park for his employees and their families to relax in, known as 'Harrap's Park' to the locals. Sadly, just like the brewery, the park is long gone.

In the mid 1970’s Glenthorne became St Joseph’s Convent with the Sisters of Annecy living in Glenthorne and working within the community of Merthyr Tydfil. The house became a family home once again in August 2012.

Our attractively decorated self-catering serviced studios are securely located within the house and have flat screen free view TV with DVD, USB connection and HDMI (10 metre cable provided), along with a comfy sofa bed and a bistro table.
